A young girl in a red dress led the way down a shaded woodland path, her parents following behind through dappled garden light. Cass has photographed this family three times now (watched the oldest grow up over the years). This session felt like that: unhurried, familiar, the kind of afternoon where everyone knows where to stand.

The Dominican neighborhood in San Rafael had dressed itself in fall. Deep red ornamental grasses, golden leaves catching the afternoon light, those divine corners that rewarded the time Cass gave them. A father tossed his daughter in the air. Siblings embraced on leaf-covered paths. Parents kissed beneath a colonial home. The foliage was doing its work, but so was this family (relaxed and close, the way people look when they’ve been somewhere before).
