Downtown San Rafael Open Space on a fall afternoon: golden light on the hilltop, a family of four who needed zero warming up. The kids were running by the time we hit the eucalyptus trees, picking up sticks, testing every log. The kid in checkered sneakers balanced on a fallen one while both parents watched. Nobody had to be told where to stand.

One thing I love about Downtown San Rafael Open Space is how the terrain shifts as you move through it (from shaded eucalyptus trails into open, sun-drenched meadows with golden fields stretching out behind you). A toddler ran straight down the path with her mouth wide open in joy. The older siblings crouched on rocky ground examining dried grasses with real curiosity. The dad lifted his youngest against the dappled canopy light. The mom held her laughing toddler beneath blooming white flowers. None of it was asked for.

A practical note if you’re planning a session here: bring a blanket. The open areas are perfect for quieter, snuggled moments on the ground, and it’s worth building that into your time. The location works across a wide range of hours (morning, mid-day, sunset) because the geography gives you options: wooded trails for shade, open hilltops for big sky, all within a short walk from easy parking in San Rafael. We ended with the kids throwing stones and climbing the big rock hill, parents right there with them.

If your family has that same “yes” energy and you want someone to capture you as you actually are, I’d love to photograph you at Downtown San Rafael Open Space or wherever feels right for your story.
