Balboa Natural Area was new to Cass, but it meant something to this family. They’d chosen it deliberately (a place that mattered). Early evening light, ocean views, trails winding through coastal grassland and cypress trees.

The shoot unfolded across the landscape: silhouettes against turbulent water at golden hour, a pregnant woman in a floral dress moving through windswept grass with her partner beside her, their young son running through wildflowers and dirt paths. Cass caught them twirling in tall grass, the man’s hand on the woman’s belly, a yellow flower passed between small hands. By dusk, the sky had turned deep teal. The family stood together under a cypress, all three of them still.

This was Cass’s first time working with them. It wouldn’t be the last.
