Tree-lined path at San Rafael Open Space, family photography location in Marin County

Hidden Gem: San Rafael Open Space | Family Photography Location Guide

Location

Most people in San Rafael have driven past this place a hundred times without stopping. It’s tucked right into downtown: a tree-lined path that opens into a quiet stretch of open space, removed from the noise of the street in a way that feels almost impossible given where it is. The light filters through the canopy in a way that’s genuinely beautiful, and the whole location has a stillness that’s rare to find this close to the center of a city.

I love this spot for family sessions because it’s low-key and easy. No long hike to get to the good light, no crowds to navigate, no long drive. You park downtown, walk two minutes, and you’re in one of the prettiest natural settings in Marin County. It works especially well for families with young kids or newborn milestone sessions where you want beauty without logistics.

This is the kind of location I’d keep to myself if I weren’t a photographer, but it deserves to be seen.
