The word “mini” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Let’s break down what it actually means.
A mini session is a shorter, more focused photography session, but “mini” can mean very different things depending on what kind you’re booking. In the Bay Area and Marin County, there are generally two types: seasonal mini sessions (15–30 minutes, scheduled back-to-back at a set location and date) and private mini sessions (45–60 minutes, on your schedule, at a location you choose). The experience, the number of images, and the price are different for each, and knowing the difference will save you a lot of confusion.
At Marin Mini Sessions, I offer both. Here’s how they work, what you get with each, and how to figure out which one is right for your family.
What’s a Seasonal Mini Session?
Seasonal mini sessions are the ones you usually see advertised in the fall or around the holidays. A photographer picks a location and a date, opens up time slots (usually 15–30 minutes each), and books multiple families back-to-back throughout the day.
Here’s what that looks like in practice: you show up at your assigned time, we shoot for 15–30 minutes at that location, and then the next family comes in. It’s efficient, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to get a handful of beautiful photos: for holiday cards, a quick family update, or just because it’s been a while.
The tradeoff is that you’re working within a tighter window. There’s less time to warm up, fewer shots overall, and the location and date are set by the photographer, not by you.
How many images you get from a seasonal mini varies a lot depending on who you hire. Some photographers include 3–5 images in the booking price, with more available for purchase after. Others include 15+. It’s worth asking upfront what’s included so you’re not surprised.
What’s a Private Mini Session?
A private mini session is a longer, more personalized experience (typically 45–60 minutes) on your schedule, at a location you choose. It can be in your home, at a park, on the beach, wherever feels right for your family.
At Marin Mini Sessions, private minis include at least 30+ edited digital images, all included in the session price. There are no per-image fees and no “pick your favorites and buy the rest.” You get the full gallery.
Because we have more time and it’s just your family, private minis are more flexible. We can do a variety of shots, adjust if your baby needs a break, move between a couple of scenes (couch to backyard, trail to overlook), and generally let things unfold without rushing. They’re still focused and efficient (we’re not spending three hours together) but an hour gives us real room to work.
Private mini sessions can be used for just about anything: newborn sessions, family photos, maternity, headshots. On my intake form, I ask every family: “What does a normal, happy moment look like for your family right now?” That answer is what I build the session around, not a generic shot list.
How Are Mini Sessions Different from Full Sessions?
Full sessions are a bigger experience overall. When I used to shoot full documentary sessions, they ran about three hours: visiting multiple locations, creating different scenes and stories, capturing a much wider range of moments. The final gallery was 100+ images, with a lot more variety in settings, moods, and compositions.
That’s the real difference: a full session gives you more of everything. More time, more scenes, more images, more stories in the final gallery. If you want to start at home, drive to the beach, change outfits, and end at a park, that’s a full session.
A mini session (even a private one) is more focused. You’re getting depth in one or two scenes rather than breadth across many. The images are still beautiful and intentional, but the scope is tighter. Less elaborate, less art-direction-intensive, and honestly, less exhausting for everyone involved.
For most families (especially those with babies and young kids) that focused format might a better fit. Not because it’s less, but because you can still get a lot out of 45–60 minutes and carry on with your day.
How Much Do Mini Sessions Cost in Marin County?
It depends on the type:
Seasonal mini sessions are typically the more affordable option. Pricing varies by photographer, but in the Bay Area you’ll generally see seasonal minis ranging from $200–$600 depending on the session length, how many images are included, and whether you need to purchase images separately after.
Private mini sessions at Marin Mini Sessions range from $500 to $850, depending on the session type (newborn, family, maternity, or headshot). Every private mini includes 30+ edited digital images (all included, no add-on costs).

How Do I Know Which Type of Mini Session Is Right for My Family?
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
A seasonal mini is a great fit if you want a quick, low-commitment way to get a few updated family photos. You’re flexible on location and date, you don’t need a ton of images, and you’re mainly looking for holiday card photos or a simple family portrait refresh.
A private mini is a better fit if you want more time, more images, and more personalization. Maybe you have a newborn and want relaxed in-home photos. Maybe you want to choose a location that’s meaningful to your family, like Old Mill Park in Mill Valley, the Tiburon waterfront, or your own backyard in San Anselmo. Maybe you just want enough breathing room that nobody feels rushed.
A full session is the right call if you want the whole experience: multiple locations, outfit changes, a large and varied gallery, and a longer narrative arc to the photos. If that sounds like what you’re after, look for a photographer who offers documentary or full-length sessions.
And if you’re still not sure? Just reach out. I’m always happy to talk through what makes sense for where you are right now. There’s no wrong answer.
Can I Personalize a Mini Session?
With a seasonal mini, personalization is limited: the location and date are set, and the time window is short. You can coordinate outfits and bring props, but the structure is mostly fixed.
With a private mini, there’s a lot more room. We choose the location together, work around your family’s schedule, and tailor the session to whatever matters to you right now. It’s still efficient (we’re not spending all day together) but it’s built around your family, not a template.
The thing I can’t do in any mini is give you three outfit changes, four different locations, and a hundred images. That’s what a full session is for. But one or two scenes, shot with intention and enough time to breathe? That’s where minis (especially private ones) really shine.
So… Is a Mini Session “Enough”?
For most families, honestly? Yes. The photos that end up framed on your wall, printed in a holiday card, and sent to the group chat. Those don’t come from having the most time or the most variety. They come from showing up, being together, and letting someone who knows what they’re doing hold the camera for a little while.
You don’t need to wait for the perfect conditions. You don’t need the perfect house or the perfect outfit. You just need to be there.
Take the photos, mama.
K, love you, bye. ♥
