The Outlook
A short walk up from a neighborhood trailhead puts you on a hilltop with golden grass, big rocks to sit on, and Mt. Tam across the valley. It’s open and airy, with nothing between you and the view. Kids climb the rocks, parents relax, and the whole thing feels like a hike without the hike.
Evening Light
I run these in the evening, ending right around sunset. The light turns dreamy and warm, and the grass glows.
What to Wear Here
This hilltop is golden. Dry grass, warm rock, and evening light that makes the whole field glow. Warm neutrals sit right inside it: cream, oat, tan, camel. For color, stay warm too. Rust, terracotta, soft gold, dusty rose. Black and deep cool colors are the ones I’d skip up here, because in a bright golden field they go much darker than everything else and become the loudest thing in the frame. Parking
Street parking in the neighborhood by the trailhead, a few minutes up the hill from downtown San Rafael. Easy to find a spot, then a short gravel path, slightly uphill, and an easy nature trail out to the outlook.
