Mini session photography in the Bay Area typically costs between $200 and $850, and that range is mostly driven by two things: how long the session is and whether your images are included in the price or sold separately after.
A shorter seasonal mini (15–30 minutes, back-to-back with other families) usually runs $200–$500. A longer private mini (45–60 minutes, just your family, at a location you choose) generally starts at $500 and goes up from there. And within both types, some photographers include all your images upfront while others charge a lower session fee but sell individual images for $50–$150 each after. That pricing model difference alone can double the final cost, so it’s worth asking before you book.

How Much Are Seasonal Mini Sessions?
Seasonal minis are announced a few times a year on my Instagram, usually in spring and fall. Pricing and details vary by event, but they’re always the more affordable option. Multiple families are scheduled throughout the day at a location I choose, and the time slots run 15–30 minutes each.

How Much Are Private Mini Sessions?
Private mini sessions are the core of what I offer. Here’s the pricing:
Newborn mini sessions. $500–$850. In-home, lifestyle-focused, for babies typically 5–21 days old.
Family mini sessions. $500–$750. Indoor or outdoor, at a location you choose in Marin County.
Maternity mini sessions. $500–$750. Best scheduled between 28–36 weeks. In-home or outdoor.
Headshot mini sessions. $500–$650. Professional headshots for individuals or small teams.
Every private mini is 45–60 minutes, on your schedule, at a location you choose. All 30+ edited digital images are included, no per-image fees, no print packages, no add-on costs.
What Makes Mini Sessions More or Less Expensive?
Across the industry (not just my business), mini session pricing comes down to a few things:
Duration. A 15-minute session costs less to deliver than a 60-minute session. The longer your photographer is with you, the more you can expect to pay.
Image inclusion. This is the one that trips people up. A $250 session fee sounds affordable until you find out each digital image costs $75–$150 extra. An $800 session with all images included might actually be less expensive in the end. Always ask: are images included, or do I purchase them after?
Session type. Newborn sessions require more prep, controlling room temperature (75–80°F), working around feeding schedules, slower pacing, and that’s reflected in the pricing. Headshot sessions are more straightforward and generally cost less.
Location. I don’t charge a travel fee within Marin County, but location complexity (permits, distance, parking logistics) can factor into the session plan. In-home sessions in San Rafael or San Anselmo are the simplest. A sunset shoot at Muir Beach takes more coordination.
How Do Mini Session Prices Compare to Full Sessions?
Full-length photography sessions are a bigger experience (more time, more locations, more scenes, more images). A documentary-style full session might run 2–3+ hours, visit multiple locations with outfit changes, and deliver 100+ images. In the Bay Area, full sessions generally start around $600 and can go well above $1,500 depending on scope.

Are Digital Images Included or Do I Have to Buy Them After?
This varies a lot by photographer, and it’s the most important pricing question to ask before booking any mini session.
Some photographers use an all-inclusive model (one price, all images included). That’s how I price my private minis. You get 30+ edited digital images and they’re yours. Download them, print them, share them, do whatever you want with them.
Other photographers use a session-fee-plus-purchase model (a lower upfront cost for the session, then you buy individual images or packages after). That’s a totally valid structure, but the final cost can add up in ways that aren’t obvious at first. If you’re comparing photographers, make sure you’re comparing the total cost including images, not just the session fee.
How Do I Book a Mini Session in Marin County?
Book directly through my website. You’ll choose a date and time, answer a few questions, pay a deposit and you’ll be booked!
For private minis, I recommend booking 2–4 weeks in advance for family and headshot sessions, and *during pregnancy *for newborn sessions so we can hold tentative dates around your due date. Maternity sessions should be booked by the start of your third trimester.
So… Is a Mini Session Worth the Price?
Here’s what I tell every parent who asks me this: the photos you take are worth infinitely more than the photos you keep meaning to take.
You don’t need to wait for the perfect outfit or the perfect nursery or the perfect postpartum glow. (Spoiler: there is no perfect postpartum glow. There’s just you, being a parent, and that’s the whole point.)
