Twenty minutes of a toddler’s best is sometimes easier than ninety minutes of escalating negotiations.

Where Are the Best Locations for Mini Sessions in Marin County?
One of the best things about living in Marin County is that you’re never more than 15 minutes from a stunning photo location. Here are some of the spots I shoot at most often, and what makes each one work:
Marin Headlands. Dramatic coastal cliffs, moody fog, and wide open space. Gorgeous year-round, but especially striking in late afternoon when the fog rolls through. Expect a short walk from the parking lot and bring layers. It’s always cooler at the coast.
Old Mill Park, Mill Valley. Towering redwoods, a creek, dappled light. This is one of the most popular family photo spots in Marin for a reason. The shade is forgiving (no squinting), and the trees make every season look good. Parking can be tricky on weekends, so weekday sessions are ideal here.
Tiburon waterfront. Bay views, Angel Island in the background, and the San Francisco skyline across the water. Beautiful for golden hour sessions. The paved waterfront path is stroller-friendly, which matters when you’re wrangling a toddler and a diaper bag.
Tennessee Valley Trail. Wide open meadow surrounded by rolling hills. The light here in the late afternoon is some of the best in Marin County. It’s a flat, easy walk from the trailhead (about 10 minutes to the good stuff).
Ring Mountain, Tiburon. Hilltop wildflower views in spring, golden grass in fall. This one involves a short uphill walk, so it’s best for families with older kids or couples. The payoff is panoramic views of the bay and Mount Tamalpais.
Downtown San Anselmo. Tree-lined streets, a charming small-town feel, and beautiful light filtering through the oaks. Great for families who want an easy, walkable session close to shops and restaurants (so you can grab coffee after, or a beer, no judgment).

For comparison, a full-length family session with a Bay Area photographer typically runs $600–$1,500 for a 1–2 hour session with 40–75+ edited images. Mini sessions give you a complete gallery at a lower price point, with the tradeoff being less time and fewer scene changes.
How Should I Prepare for a Mini Session in Marin County?
The short answer: less than you think.
Wardrobe. Coordinate, don’t match. Soft, solid colors photograph better than bold patterns or logos. Earth tones, muted blues, creams, and sage greens look beautiful against Marin County’s natural backdrops (redwoods, golden hills, coastal bluffs). Avoid neon, all-black, or large graphic tees. If you’re doing an outdoor session, dress in layers. Marin microclimates are real, and it can be 75°F in San Rafael and 58°F at Rodeo Beach.
Timing. If you’re booking a seasonal mini, your time slot is set. Just show up on time (seriously, these run back-to-back and there’s no buffer). For private minis, I’ll work with you to find the best light for your location. Golden hour in Marin County is typically 1–2 hours before sunset, and it’s worth planning around.
Kids. Fed, rested, and in a decent mood is the goal. Not perfect mood. Decent mood. Bring snacks. Bring a favorite toy for bribery purposes. And know that if your toddler has a meltdown, I’ve seen it all. Some of the best photos happen right after the tears dry, when everyone relaxes and stops trying to perform.
Your house (for in-home sessions). You do not need to deep-clean your house. I promise. I’m looking for good light and real life, not a magazine spread. Clear the kitchen counters if they’re in the background, maybe make the bed, and call it done. I will gently move things out of frame if needed. This is not an HGTV shoot.
Your face. Whatever makes you feel like a polished version of your authentic self. Do that.
When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Mini Session?
The traditional “newborn window” is 5–14 days after birth, and there’s a good reason for that. Babies at this age are sleepier, more flexible (literally, they curl up beautifully), and less likely to be in a wide-awake-and-opinionated phase. If you want those classic curled-up, sleeping-baby poses, this is the sweet spot.
But here’s what I tell every parent: the best time for newborn photos is whenever you’re ready. If you’re two weeks postpartum and you can barely keep your eyes open and the idea of someone coming to your house with a camera sounds like the worst thing in the world: that is not the right time. If your baby is four weeks old and you’re finally starting to feel like a human again and you think, “oh, I should get some photos”: that is a great time.
I photograph newborns up to about 8 weeks. The session looks a little different at 4–6 weeks than it does at 7 days. Babies are more alert, less curly, and have more personality showing through. What Should I Look for When Choosing a Mini Session Photographer in Marin County?
Not all mini sessions are created equal, and the things that matter most aren’t always the things you’d think to ask about. Here’s what I’d look at:
What’s actually included in the price? Some photographers charge a session fee and then sell images à la carte, so a $200 mini session might end up costing $600 after you buy your photos. Others (like me) include every edited image in the session price. Ask before you book.
How many edited images will you receive? The range in Marin County is wide, from 8–10 images at the low end to 30+ at the high end.
What’s the turnaround time? Most mini session photographers in Marin County deliver galleries within 2–4 weeks. If you need photos for holiday cards or a specific deadline, confirm the timeline before booking.
