A Morning Session
Almost everything I run is in the evening. This one is in the morning, which makes it the easy pick if your afternoons are already spoken for, or if your kids are at their best before lunch.
The Trees
Lovers Lane is a wide path through the Presidio with tall eucalyptus running down both sides. There’s one tree I keep coming back to, with roots that spread wide enough for a whole family to settle into. Fallen logs all along the path for kids to walk, and piles of sticks they inevitably start building with.
It feels cozy in there. Very fall and winter, even when it isn’t.
What to Wear Here
In among the eucalyptus it’s grey-green bark, deep shade, and a brown forest floor, cozy rather than bright. Deeper color works well in here, olive, rust, mustard, deep teal. Cream and oat are lovely too, and read bright against the trees when the whole family wears them. It’s a cool morning either way, so layers you’ll want to keep on. More on my what to wear page.
Who It’s For
If you love the forest, this is your spot. It’s quieter and deeper than my coastal locations, less about a view and more about being in among the trees. It’s also one of those places in San Francisco that people are glad to have on their wall years later.
Getting There
Street parking on Liggett Avenue, right at the south end of the lane. It’s about a two minute walk from the car, and flat the whole way.
I’ll send the exact meeting spot with your confirmation. Which end of the lane we start from depends on where the light is sitting that morning.
Timing
These run from 9:00 to 11:00 in the morning. The grove is sheltered, so the light holds steady across the whole window (no rushing to beat a sunset, and no wind off the water like at Land’s End or the Palace).
Dress warm. Mornings in the Presidio run cool even when the rest of the city doesn’t.
